Ayatollah Dr. Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini Beheshti
Mohammad Beheshti Ayatollah Dr. Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini Beheshti (October 24, 1928 - June 28, 1981) was an Iranian cleric, the secretary-general of the Islamic Republic Party, and the head of the Islamic Republic's judicial system. He was assassinated together with more than seventy members of the Islamic Republic party on June 28, 1981.
He was born in a family whose members were familiar with Islamic values. His father was one of Isfahan's clergies and prayer-leader of Lomban mosque who went to the village once a week in order to preach and solve the problems of people and establish the community prayers.
Beheshti was born in Isfahan and studied both at the University of Tehran and under Allameh Tabatabaei in Qom. Since the early 1960s, he was involved in activities against the monarchy and was arrested several times by the Shah's secret police, the SAVAK.
Following the Islamic Revolution, he became one of the original members of the Council of Revolution of Iran and soon its chairman. In the first post-revolutionary Iranian parliament, he led the Islamic Republic party together with Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.
Beheshti died in terrorist attack on June 28, 1981, when a bomb exploded during a party conference (Haft-e tir bombing). The bomb was planted by the People's Mujahedin of Iran terrorist organization (also known as the MKO), who at that time were involved in a campaign of bombings and attacks in Iran. The assassin was identified as Mohammad Reza Kolahi, an operative of the People's Mujahedin of Iran.
Some parts of Imam Khomeini's statement on Shahid Beheshti’s martyrdom and also the martyrs of Islamic republic of Iran's party:
Hereby; I both congratulate and express my condolences to the clergymen’s society as well as the Muslims of the world. I express my condolences because since Jun 4 (Khordad 15) we have lost so many young people, the true believers, men and women by now. This disaster was a great loss for Islam and Muslims specially the recent one. And the role of the United States of America in this vicious event emerged. They, who had no idea, convicted such a crime. The lawyers who were the Majlis representatives, the ministers, and from the judiciary body “Dr. Beheshti” were the enemies’ aims from the very first days of the Islamic Republic existence. And as you knew the Islamic organizations were also their aims. The Assembly of Experts was directed because the majority of its members were the committed members and among them were clergymen. The Deliberative Assembly was directed because their members were formed out of so many experts who were committed as well. The Judiciary was aimed because there were so many experts and also clergymen. This sequence has been a case and it still continues. And now we have lost so many friends and those who were interested in Islam. However; I congratulate to the Iranian people for she has raised such children and dedicated to God Almighty.
